Colour Block
Vancouver, BC
2019 - ongoing
Colour Block is an excercise in looking deeply into the soul of an existing building, determining its true nature, and celebrating all of its original potential in a new and exciting way. This project retains much of the existing formal massing but addresses some of the functional issues with larger windows, a reconfiguration of interior spaces and a dramatically improved thermal envelope. A bedroom/primary bath occupied the top floor with the best light and views, but by nature of being a bedroom was rarely used during the day, is transformed into a loose communal family office/wfh space with areas for lounging, studying, working at a desk, etc. The exterior received a completely new envelope with additional insulation and new imported European windows to significantly improve the airtightness and thermal performance. Stucco was chosen as a cladding material for its durability, ease of care, and the opportunity to explore an injection of colour into the staid neighborhood.
